Sarah felt an ache for a cigarette, and took the pack from her purse. Only a few remained, and they were stale and dry. But she lit one, and took a long drag, reveling in the harsh, acrid taste of the smoke as it poured out of her mouth. It was like breathing out grief.

“And now,” she asked, “are you doing what you set out to do? What you came back for?”

“Yes,” he said, as though it gave him no great joy. But then his tone grew angry. “It wasn’t right, what happened to Danny. He shouldn’t have died like that.”

“No,” she said. “He shouldn’t.” She put her hand on his. “It was very wrong.”

Ashe turned his hand upward so that his fingers wrapped around hers. “You know things, Sarah, don’t you? You’ve seen…what’s happening to me now, when it happened to Eric.”

Sarah rubbed the engagement ring again. “Yes. I have.”

“I’m going to finish what I’m supposed to do here. But what happens to me when I do?”

“You go back,” she said quietly.

“And what if…” The pressure of his fingers increased slightly. “What if I don’t want to go back?”

She looked away from his pleading eyes, and gently drew back her hand. “Then you’re damned.”

Except for the mirrors, the loft was full of furniture and fabrics and canvases, soft surfaces all. But the word, damned, seemed to echo and re-echo in Sarah’s ears for a long time, as though it rang off of canyons, and down deep abysses, and was shouted from atop high towers made of iron.
